Community College Initiative

The active members of NCOURAGES are currently in discussion on collaboration on a nation-wide community college initiative to attract under-represented students who attend community colleges to attend a four year institution upon completion of their associates degree.

Statistics show that students pursuing post secondary education,  42 percent of all African-American students, 56 percent of all Hispanic students, and 54 percent of all Native-American students attend a community college.

An ASEE PRISM article predicted engineering educators who cultivate community college students will break down barriers that hinder attempts to transfer into university engineering programs will bring substantially more students-especially those from underrepresented populations - into engineering education.
